Why Is My RAM 1500 Check Engine Light On?

2021 Ram 1500 Limited with 12-inch touchscreen

Is yourRAM 1500 check engine light flashing? Don’t panic as it may not be serious. But, that doesn’t mean you should ignore it either. Several of our Burlington customers try to reset the light themselves.

Is this wise? Should you try it yourself or let ourservice department handle it? Keep reading to find out why the light might be flashing. We’ll even talk about how to reset the check engine light on the RAM 1500.

It Could Just Be a Loose Fuel Cap

It’s true. The RAM 1500 check engine light, like the warning light on most vehicles, can sometimes be triggered by a loose fuel cap. Do the following if your check engine light is on:

  1. Remove the fuel cap.
  2. Screw it back on tightly.
  3. If the cap was the problem, the light should go back off once you’ve driven about 10 to 20 miles after doing this.

How to Know What’s Triggering the RAM 1500 Check Engine Light

If it’s not the fuel cap, the only way to find out what’s causing your RAM 1500 check engine light to flash is to connect a code reader to the terminal in your car. What, you don’t have a code reader lying around in your garage? That’s not a problem. Justschedule an appointment with our service department, and we’ll figure out the problem, so you can get back on our Deer Trail roads in no time.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a RAM 1500

We don’t recommend resetting the check engine light unless you know that the problem causing it has been resolved. Follow the steps below if you know the issue has been fixed:

How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a RAM 1500:

  1. Make sure the ignition is turned off.
  2. Find the negative (-) post on your truck’s battery. It will be the terminal that does not have the red cover.
  3. Disconnect the negative terminal. Leave it disconnected for about 20 minutes.
  4. Reconnect the negative terminal.
