Tips For Driving In The Snow | Limon, CO

If you're a newer driver or aren't used to driving in a frozen winter, take a minute to review our top tips for driving in the snow.

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowlyIf you slam on the gas or brake, you are likely to lose traction, skid, and spin out. Give yourself more braking distance.
  • Slow downYou should always follow the speed limit, but this is especially true in wintry conditions. Drive under the speed limit if conditions warrant it, but remember to turn on your hazard lights.
  • Increase visibilitySpeaking of hazard lights, always turn on your headlights in snowy conditions. Clear off your windshield, windows, and lights before driving. It is crucial that other drivers can see your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
  • Be careful on hillsDo not use too much power going uphill, or else your wheels may start to spin. That being said, do not brake while going uphill. You will need that momentum to make it to the top.
  • Get winter tiresIf you will regularly be driving in snowy or icy conditions, invest in a reliable set of winter tires. These perform twice as well as all-season tires in the snow.
  • Don't get cockyIf you drive a truck or SUV with four-wheel or all-wheel drive, don't be fooled by your vehicle's size and systems: Just because you have AWD does not mean you are invincible. The best way to stay safe is to drive as if you don't have AWD at all. The safety systems on your vehicle aren't meant to replace safe driving. Go slowly and follow the rules.
  • Stay homeIf conditions are bad, only drive out of necessity. Don't feel pressured to go out because you already made plans: Getting in an accident will ruin those anyway, and possibly a lot more. Sometimes it's best to stay home.

While some of these tips might seem small, they can make a huge difference on the road. We at Transwest CDJR hope you drive safe this winter, and visit us if you're interested in winter tires or need car maintenance.
