Snow tires are the single most important winter driving safety feature you can add to your car, truck, or SUV. If you drive in the northern half of the United States or other areas that get particularly snowy and/or icy during the winter, consider purchasing snow tires for your vehicle.

Snow tires, now frequently called wintertires because of new designs that make them great in cold weather - regardless of what's on the ground - are specially designed to give you traction in wintry conditions. They increase your ability to accelerate, brake, and steer on snowy roads as well as in cold and dry weather. They have been proven to prevent collisions in the winter, so by extension they keep drivers and passengers safe.

But what if you have all-wheel drive and all-season tires? While all-wheel drive does provide increased traction, it still cannot provide the same benefits of winter tires. And according to AutoBlog, all-season tire performance in winter is only roughly half as strong as winter tires.

Winter tires do have an upfront cost, but because you will use them for half the year and your regular set of tires for the other half of the year, the two sets will last twice the amount of years than they would if you used a single set year-round. So if a good set of tires last you four years, you will get eight years of tire life out of each set. The costs will essentially balance out over that time frame.

However, you will need to pay to have the tires installed and taken off your wheels at the beginning and end of each season. To reduce this cost, you can purchase winter tires that are mounted on dedicated wheels. This is another upfront purchase that will save you in the long term. And remember, because winter tires reduce accidents, they may save you money by helping you avoid collisions and all of the associated repair fees, medical bills, and rising insurance premiums.

Winter/snow tires are worthwhile, and if you'd like to invest in a set or install them, we can help you out at Transwest CDJR.
