One of the most iconic American models on the road today is the Jeep® Wrangler. This rough and ready SUV has a long patriotic history that dates back to World War II. Here is a snapshot of how the Wrangler that we know and love came to be.

In the early 1940s, a company called Willys-Overland earned a government contract to produce a military four-wheel drive vehicle for use in the war. The vehicle they designed was called the MB, but it was quickly named the "jeep."

When the war was over, many returning soldiers brought home their jeeps. This led to Willys developing a civilian version called the CJ. Americans across the country loved the CJ for its reliability. It earned a reputation for its versatility.

Kaiser Motors bought Willys-Overland in 1953. In 1954, it started producing the CJ-5. This versatile design was so popular, it remained in production for nearly 30 years. Kaiser also officially changed the name of the model to Jeep®. American Motors Corporation bought Kaiser-Jeep in 1970 and continued to produce the CJ-5.

In 1976, American Motors Corporation debuted the CJ-7 model. It offer improved road manners, a larger size, and options like an automatic transmission, metal doors, and a roof.

The Wrangler officially made its debut in 1987 with the YJ model. It was a more civilized version of its predecessors and came with a wider track, lower ride height, larger windshield, and squared-off headlights. This design feature was not popular. Chrysler bought AMC not long after the Wrangler was introduced.

The Wrangler TJ model arrived in 1997. This model brought back the more popular round headlight design. It was also more comfortable to drive.

In 2007, the Wrangler entered a new JK generation. It was now available as a four-door version called the Wrangler Unlimited.

The Wrangler JL model was introduced in 2018. This model, available now at Transwest Chrysler Dodge Jeep® Ram boasts modern technology, even better on-road handling, and a variety of new off-road features.
